My evaluation

Evaluation

• In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

In creation of my magazine I have tried to follow and use the basic layout of a normal music magazine to keep it as professional looking as possible. I included things like a bold mast head to catch the eye of the buyer, and the use of a picture to help advertise what is in my magazine. I used this as nearly any type of magazine has a image on the front of it to show what is in their magazine. I also tried to advertise a CD which comes free with the magazine, to try and sell my magazine even more than it normally would.

• How does your media product represent particular social groups?

My magazine represents the metal music background. I have included music which you can find in similar magazines such as (Kerrang and Metal Hammer) which are both types of magazine which include the same material.

• What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and
why?

I think most retail shops and music shops will sell my magazine as they have the music to sell along side the comments that are made in the magazine so they can sell to items with one person. Also the college could also distribute my product as many of the college students would be into the style of music which would be contained in my magazine.

• Who would be the audience for your media product?

The main audience for my product is people who are into mainly rock and metal type music and less of the people who are into more mainstream hip hop type music. Also I could aim for my audience in the teens as a college would retail my magazine. It will be for an audience of both genders as it features music which both male and female can refer to.

• How did you attract/address your audience?

I attracted my audience by offering a free CD and many features in my magazines such as a double page spread of a new artists and bands work which is new in the charts and now available to download or buy.

• What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?

I have learned about using publisher more effectively and can take the most out of what it has to offer, also I know now how to use GIMP with ease as I used it to create my front cover and double page spread. It helped to add colour and more flow within my magazine.

 • Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?

I feel as if I have made my product look more professional and not as if it has been made by an amateur. Also I think it appeals to my target audience better than it would if I hadn’t had any practise with the programs I used.

I am planning on changing the image on it, as it is not my own. I will change it to one of the photos i took of a band, a few weeks a go.

Type of image i want as my front cover!

For the front cover of my music magazine i will want to have a group photo of about 4-6 people. I think it will give me a strong good looking front cover to base my magazine on.

Magzine cover analysis

NME’s double page spread on Paramore comes across very in your face with the colours and presentation. Haley Williams stands out from the rest band as she has been glamourised, by the brightness of her hair, eyes and lips. She is placed at the front of the magazine as she is the leader singer of the band and also as she will attract a male audience to the magazine as she is portrayed as a very beautiful person.... However this could also attract a female audience as they want to be as beautiful and strong as her.
The layout of the magazine is pretty standard compared to others... it has a main image on the front with the main headline going across the middle which links to the image, usually in a brighter colour to help catch the buyers eye, and draw them to reading it. The mast head NME'  has been partially covered up. This is because they are a renowned music magazine, which a lot of people know and read.it.

textual analysis

Kerrang is a world wide renound magazine for metal and rock music...  As you can see the mast head ' Kerrang' is as if it is the noise from the guitar strings. Also it looks as if it is glass which has been shattered. Also the biggest headline on the page is roughly the same size as the mast head, this is used, to advertise the content a lot better than having little headlines... added to the main headline, is an image of the band which takes up most of the magazine. this is really effective in advertising, as they do this every week of the most popular bands or albums out to the public, or some new material from bands. The cover has many headlines as it has a lot to offer. It uses advertising to persuade the reader to buy it, it shows that it has free posters, which also make the reader want to buy it. Kerrang have placed the image of '30 seconds to mars' right in the middle of the page, they have overlapped the title as they are well known enough to do this.
Quite often Kerrang magazine has a dark background to fit the stereotypical style of 'metal' and 'emo'.... this is only because the content in the magazine is put in for that style of audience.
